German medical device company KARL STORZ has acquired UK-based artificial intelligence (AI)-based software manufacturer Innersight Labs (ISL) for an undisclosed amount.

ISL’s products create 3D models from medical scans to make surgery easier and more successful.

The company has developed a software-only product, Innersight3D, that enables surgeons to generate a patient-specific 3D model from a medical computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan.

Innersight Labs labels the received scans as per the different tissue types and creates an interactive 3D model.

The doctors will subsequently receive a web connection that allows them to access and interact with the three-dimensional representation.

KARL STORZ claimed that this precise preoperative assessment allows shorter recovery times and a lower chance of surgical complications.

Additionally, ISL’s AI-based algorithm can drastically cut down on manual labour when compared to rival products, lowering the cost per model and time to deployment.

Currently, Innersight Labs collaborates with partners, has eight employees, and has an office in India.

The company will now concentrate on joint technological development and commercial growth as part of the globally active KARL STORZ Group.

The British AI firm also has expertise in soft tissue deformation and mechanics, computational physics, image processing, and machine learning along with experience in cloud software development.

KARL STORZ executive vice president Thorsten Molitor said: “We want to continue pioneering MedTech, particularly in the areas of software and robotics.

“The research background that ISL brings to the table therefore fits ideally with our vision, mission, and strategic goals. We warmly welcome them to the KARL STORZ family.”

The acquisition of ISL adds an AI solution to the KARL STORZ portfolio, which represents the next phase in the effort to advance artificial intelligence in robotic and laparoscopic imaging systems for the medical field.

KARL STORZ’s product range already includes endoscopes, high-end medical devices, and integrated solutions for the operating room.
