Respiratory technology company Inspira Technologies has received a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its new convertible dual lumen cannula device and method of use.
The device is being developed for the INSPIRA ART System. Its approved patent includes 20 claims that were found original, innovative, and have industrial applicability.
A dual lumen cannula is said to be a disposable medical tool used for venous draining and blood reinfusion at the same time during procedures like extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in intensive care units (ICUs).
The dual lumen cannula only needs one incision point and consists of a single tube with two distinct inner channels or lumens, Inspira Technologies said.
Based on the recent US patent grant, the Israel-based company intends to submit applications for similar patents in other countries. In the future, the firm plans to combine the convertible dual lumen cannula with its other devices.
Additionally, the firm has plans to sell the convertible dual lumen cannula separately as a disposable product in the future.
Inspira Technologies CEO Dagi Ben-Noon said: “The novel, and now patented, convertible dual lumen cannula device represents another step forward in the delivery of new technologies designed to be simple and scalable.
“In today’s market, dual lumens are extremely expensive to manufacture. Therefore, Inspira Technologies believes that the new device can provide the medical market with a more affordable solution, which could contribute to patient safety, procedural efficiency, and reduced risks and complications.”
The convertible dual lumen cannula device intravascularly transforms a single-lumen cannula into a dual lumen cannula after initial insertion. This allows for the same incision point to possibly have multiple uses.
According to the respiratory technology firm, the convertible dual lumen is made to enable quick response and reduce complications, risk, and additional infection points.
The INSPIRA ART system is said to be a potential new approach to acute respiratory care that is currently being developed. It is expected to make use of the newly patented convertible dual lumen cannula as a key component.
