Swiss medical company Alcon has unveiled its plans to introduce TOTAL30, which is said to be the first-and-only monthly replacement water gradient lens.

The new TOTAL30 lens leverages Alcon’s Water Gradient material, which was initially introduced with DAILIES TOTAL contact lenses.

The reusable Water Gradient design of TOTAL30 is based on new biomimetic CELLIGENT Technology, which combines a biomimetic surface and unique lens chemistry.

Also, the lens features an inherently lubricious surface, which is equally soft as the human cornea.

TOTAL30 lenses are clinically proven to feel like nothing, at day 30, and offers a premium wearing experience for reusable contact lens wearers, said the company.

Alcon global vision care franchise president and general manager Andy Pawson said: “We are incredibly proud to expand our TOTAL brand with TOTAL30, the newest member of the Water Gradient family, designed for reusable lens wearers.

“While daily disposable contact lenses remain appealing to many lens wearers, approximately two-thirds of contact lens wearers globally choose reusable lenses.

“Despite this preference, innovation within the reusable lens segment has lagged behind daily disposables over the past 10 years.

“Today, we change that by delivering a reusable lens with a Water Gradient surface that remains durable for a full 30 days to help people see brilliantly.”

Alcon said that its Water Gradient contact lens material provides a reusable lens that approaches 100% water at the surface and gives a gentle cushion of moisture to the eye.

Its TOTAL30 is compatible with all lens care solutions and offers patients enhanced comfort of Water Gradient material, as most new wearers start with a reusable contact lens.

The Water Gradient surface of TOTAL30 is durable and remains intact during a full month of wear with daily cleaning, disinfecting and storing, said the company.

Alcon is planning to commercialise its TOTAL30 in the US and limited number of countries in Europe this year, with full commercial availability in early 2022.
