Sample Preparation of Medical Devices for Biocompatibility Testing

Biocompatibility testing is the process of evaluating a medical device or material to see whether it will cause reactions such as fever, irritation, death, seizures, rashes, or has the potential to cause cancer. These tests are conducted by exposing animals or cell lines directly to the medical device or material, or more often than not to an extract of that medical device or material.

How the extract is performed is one of, if not the most important aspect of any biocompatibility test. But, it is the most frequently overlooked aspect of biocompatibility tests, particularly by people or companies that view biocompatibility testing as a nonsensical obstacle in the way of getting to market.
