The canton is situated in a European region with one of the highest concentration of pharmaceutical and biotech companies and therefore benefits from a unique network. Novartis and Roche, two of the world’s top ten pharmaceutical companies; have their headquarters immediately adjacent to the Canton of Solothurn.
Spirig Pharma AG, a typical Solothurn pharmaceutical company, is famous for the Daylong sun cream that they produce here for all markets. Many biotech companies (Biolytix, B`SYS, Dionex AG, ROOTec Bioactives AG etc.) are headquartered in the canton.
The network of research institutions such as the universities, the Federal Institutes of Technology, and the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland are all in the vicinity. About 360 professors are active at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich together with their research teams.
With its own Biozentrum, the University of Basel supports a research-friendly climate in the region. It is one of the world’s leading centers in the sector of modern biology. About a 1,000 professors, lecturers and scientific assistants are active in the disciplines of life science and natural sciences.
The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland established the focal point "Life Science" in 2005. This department promotes research cooperation for companies. Smaller companies in particular are able to benefit enormously from this inspiring intellectual environment.
