Lubricious Coatings from Bayer MaterialScience

Bayer MaterialScience has launched a new lubricious surface treatment for catheters and other medical devices under the brand name Baymedix® CL 100. This coating combines a very low coefficient of wet friction with high durability and biocompatibility. Lubricious coatings have found widespread use in a wide range of medical devices where clinicians need to reduce the amount of friction encountered between the components of a medical device, for example leads and catheters, or between the device and a patient’s tissue. For instance, they give surgeons better handling and maneuverability when performing procedures like cardiovascular stenting.

Baymedix® CL 100 can be adapted to many substrates but is especially suitable for application to elastomeric materials of the sort common in catheters, such as polyether-block amide (Pebax®), thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and nylon. Impressively low coefficients of wet friction, 0.01-0.03, have been achieved on several prototype catheters.

Unlike other lubricious and hydrophilic coatings, Baymedix® CL 100 is grafted directly onto the surface of the medical device rather than applied as a separate coating. As a result, the coating is covalently attached to the substrate, giving excellent adhesion and durability. The especially thin coating is just a few microns thick.

The activation and surface modification processes take place in an aqueous medium. The process is scalable and suitable for many types of medical device, since no special equipment is needed to cure the coatings.

A key feature of Baymedix® CL 100 is that it can be applied to the lumens, or inside surfaces, of catheters. Lumen coatings are particularly useful where one catheter or device needs to be passed through another. "Because the coating is anchored directly on the device surface, there’s no restriction on the shape of part we can treat," explained Chris Koppenborg, an expert for medical device products at Bayer MaterialScience.

The company is currently building up the new Baymedix® brand for bio-materials for use in medical devices. Bayer is able to coat customer samples in its facilities and return the coated parts for evaluation. In addition, Bayer is well placed to provide manufacturing and regulatory support to help ensure the success of customers’ medical devices.
