The new product is available as small (6mm) and large (11mm) systems, allowing surgeons to avoid steps, as well as bars and clamps from the external fixation process.

Zimmer Trauma president Nate Folkert said: "The design philosophy of the XtraFix External Fixation System is based on increasing efficiency above all else.

"Each component of the XtraFix System incorporates only the most useful features from the many different systems currently on the market and combines them into one time-saving and highly efficient device."

According to the company, the XtraFix is a modular system that provides surgeons advances in design technology and materials.

The firm’s recently launched small (6mm) system allows surgeons to connect small and large systems with a single clamp, accommodating small extremity fractures in larger constructs.

The system’s 3D bar or pin to bar or pin design helps surgeons to place pins where the fracture dictates and not the fixator, noted Zimmer.

With operations in around 25 countries and selling products in about 100 countries, Zimmer develops and markets orthopaedic reconstructive, spinal and trauma devices, dental implants and related surgical products.
