Varian Medical Systems will exhibit RapidArc Radiosurgery technology at the 2012 International Conference of the American Thoracic Society (ATS) in San Francisco, US, which will be held later this week.

RapidArc Radiosurgery technology is designed to be used on the company’s TrueBeam STx system for treating early-stage inoperable lung cancer and many thoracic tumors.

The technology facilitates clinicians to target and treat tumors non-invasively by using X-ray beams.

Varian senior director surgical sciences Calvin Huntzinger said research has been accruing to show that radiosurgery can be a viable option for early-stage, inoperable lung cancer patients.

"In addition, a major NCI-funded study is under way to see if that viability extends to high-risk operable Stage I lung cancer patients," Huntzinger added.
