Terumo Philippines Corp (TPC), a Japanese firm manufacturing syringes, needles and intravenous catheter at the Laguna Technopark, is expanding its domestic operations in the country, as it plans to close down its two European sites, which produce medical supplies.

Terumo is currently producing high-end syringes and catheters for hospitals, medical and dental companies at Laguna Technopark, Binan, reported Manila Bulletin. Its total investments in the special economic zone in Laguna Technopark is placed at P2 billion.

Elmer San Juan, spokesman of Philippine Economic Zone Authority, said that Terumo’s expansion in the Philippines may trigger closure of its two plants in two countries, one is in Belgium, in Europe.

Terumo’s proposed new project in the country would still be in the area of medical supplies, but which are not manufactured here yet by its local unit. At present, all of the company’s syringes and catheter production are exported abroad.
