St. Jude Medical, Inc. (St. Jude Medical) has confirmed to employees that it has laid off about 200 people in sales, service and support positions across the US, Dow Jones reported. The job cuts are a result of spending in the company's US sales division that was above the level prescribed by the company's operating plan in the second quarter of 2009.

The company noted that this reduction of employees affects less than 1.5% of its total global employees, and about two positions per region across the US.

The reduction of employees affect all cardiac product categories and involve technical service representatives, sales representatives and other support personnel in the U.S. business, a spokeswoman said.

St. Jude Medical is a cardiovascular and implantable neurostimulation devices company.
