Medical technology firm Smith+Nephew has partnered with Rods&Cones to offer smart surgery glasses and digital remote assistance to customers.

Smith+Nephew representatives can see through the eyes of the surgeon, instrumentalist nurse, or any other healthcare professional, by giving consumers smart surgery glasses.

This allows for continuous remote support before, during, and after surgical operations.

The technology, which was first utilised in the UK to help the NHS and other clients, enables Smith+Nephew to provide technical support for the safe and efficient usage of its products at the appropriate time from any location in the world.

It ensures that a specialist is accessible remotely to provide the best possible insights precisely when they need them.

Smith+Nephew UKI/Nordics region managing director Simon Tarry said: “I am delighted that we have agreed to partner with one of the most innovative companies in the area of remote surgical support.

“This new partnership will enable our team to deliver the highest possible expertise exactly when our customers and patients need it.

“At the same time, I believe enhancing our ability to support our customers remotely serves patient safety and sustainability to great effect.”

Through the multi-year contract with Rods&Cones, the firm can expand its capacity to provide clients with remote support, allowing for communication with specialised surgeons during minimally invasive surgery.

The MIS (Minimal Invasive Surgery) Kit links to the Rods&Cones Remote Expert interface to enable users to follow and participate in surgeries as if they were present in the operating room.

Rods&Cones CEO and founding partner Bruno Dheedene said: “We are thrilled to work with such a great company as Smith+Nephew.

“The achievements they have made in the MedTech industry, especially within the sphere of repair, regeneration and replacement of soft and hard tissue has been awe-inspiring.

“This partnership between Smith+Nephew and Rods&Cones will be a great step forward and together we will change healthcare for the better.”
