US-based ScanMed of Resonance Innovations has introduced a new prostate coil, the PROCURE, for the MRI market.

The new PROCURE Coil (prostate, rectum, ovaries, cervix, uterus, reproductive) in firm’s Game-Changer Coil Line features lightweight semiflex design, which facilitates accurate positioning.

The new coil positions multiple antenna elements closer to the target anatomies regardless of patient size, and is similar to wearing a diaper, noted ScanMed.

The enclosure of the antenna set is made by using flexible liquid impermeable and biocompatible materials, and the product is accompanied with disposable liners, which allows the coil to be easily changed between patients.

According to the company, the phased array coil can be configured to operate with an endorectal probe, as well as accommodates popular biopsy systems.

Radboud Prostate MR-Reference Center radiology professor Dr Jelle Barentsz said: "There is an increase of the use of multi-parametric prostate MRI, as more and more urologists realize its significant value for early diagnosis.

"The prostate, however, is an organ that is located deep in the pelvis. Its distance to the surface is posteriorly, anteriorly and caudally significant. Therefore a special coil needs to be developed for optimal signal reception. The PROCURE has elements that also receive signal from the caudal part of the prostate."
