Riverside University Health System, a US-based healthcare system, will implement FloPatch, a point-of-care ultrasound assessment tool developed by Canadian medical device company Flosonics Medical for monitoring blood flow in real time.

FloPatch is designed to enhance real-time precision in IV fluid management for sepsis. Cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the wireless, wearable, point-of-care Doppler ultrasound system empowers healthcare professionals to make precise patient assessments and determine the most suitable therapeutic interventions.

Riverside University Health System co-sepsis chair, ultrasound director, and emergency medicine physician Korbin Haycock said: “FloPatch rapidly provides non-invasive haemodynamic data that help guide the clinician’s management of complex patients. I’m excited to have this tool to incorporate into our sepsis program as well as use it to manage other critically ill patients.”

FloPatch, which is custom-designed for swift and dependable assessments, adheres to the neck of a patient, above the carotid artery. Upon placement, it promptly initiates the collection of real-time blood flow information with every heartbeat.

The data is then wirelessly transmitted to a secure iOS application tailored for healthcare providers. The application presents live Doppler data and along with it employs advanced analytics to dissect each heartbeat to provide crucial metrics.

The data supports healthcare professionals to make well-informed, time-critical decisions right at the bedside, offering a high level of precision, particularly in demanding and urgent medical situations such as sepsis management, said Flosonics Medical.

Riverside University Health System nursing director Jaclyn Bond said: “Timing of assessment and appropriate fluid resuscitation is critical in sepsis. Our code team has seen firsthand how efficient FloPatch is in assessing both responsiveness and tolerance in sepsis and septic shock.

“We are excited and proud to be one of the early adopters of this cutting-edge technology, and the timing couldn’t be better as we raise awareness during Sepsis Awareness Month.”

In March 2023, Flosonics Medical announced that El Camino Health became the first health system in the world to use the FloPatch tool for sepsis management.
