US-based diagnostic firm Rhinostics has unveiled its new patent-pending VERIstic Collection Device, designed for small volume blood collection.

VERIstic is said to be suitable for use at-home and clinician-assisted collection methods enabled by a simple finger prick collection.

It is a replacement for dried blood spot (DBS) cards, genetic testing, clinical trials, antibody, hormone, and protein detection, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other applications.

The device combines tried-and-true capillary blood collection with an integrated, automation-ready cap to save time, money, and difficulties in a hands-free workflow when the sample reaches the laboratory.

Its collection method is quick, easy, and pleasant for both patients and medical professionals, said the diagnostic firm.

Once the finger is pricked with a lancet, 50µL of blood is immediately wicked up the distinctive and patent-pending 3-sided capillary tube.

The tube is fitted into the corresponding transport tube for transporting it to the laboratory.

Once the tube arrives at the lab, 96 samples can be quickly accessed within seconds via 2D barcodes on the transport tube’s bottom.

Furthermore, the process is followed by robotic sample decapping, quick sample elution, and automated liquid handling technologies.

Lab technicians are free to attend to other tasks as blood elutes from the capillary tube with mild agitation and is instantly prepared for processing.

Rhinostics president and CEO Cheri Walker said: “We’re very excited to bring this truly unique and simple innovation to the blood collection market.

“Finally, patients and clinicians can be assured of comfortable metered blood collection, where the clear capillary allows the collector to monitor collection and laboratories gain consistent blood collection combined with cost and time-saving efficiencies during processing through automated decapping and robotic sample processing.”

The company is planning for a global debut of VERIstic at the 2022 AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo to be held July 26-28 in Chicago, Illinois.
