Medical device firm Rehabtronics has introduced a ReGrasp Bionic Glove in the US to help patients improve hand rehabilitation following a stroke or injury.

The glove uses proven functional electrical stimulation (FES) technology to enhance hand function.

The glove’s FES unit is programmable to create functional home exercise programmes (HEP) and assist patients in using the glove as a functional device to perform everyday chores.

According to the firm, ReGrasp is a slim, fitting profile that can be worn all day to assist with daily activities.

The user can control it by a small wireless controller worn behind the ear that allows patients to manage hand function with simple head motions.

ReGrasp by Rehabtronics is FDA-cleared and built to stringent medical standards. It is available with a price tag of $2,995 including tax, delivery, and a credit for a therapist fitting.

Rehabtronics CEO Dr Rahul Samant said: “Until now, rehabilitation gloves with FES technology have only been accessible to patients in a clinical setting.

“Our research indicates that patients regain hand use faster when using ReGrasp for continuous therapy at home and functional use everywhere.

“That’s why we’re making ReGrasp available directly to patients through our website. We are proud to offer pricing that is a fraction of the cost of competitive rehabilitation technology.”

The firm said that a prescription from a doctor or a licenced therapist is needed in order to buy ReGrasp.

Home health therapist Ashley Gatewood said: “The ReGrasp provides patients with the opportunity to have functional rehabilitation at their fingertips in order to improve their independence and quality of life.

“This device opens the door for patients to have access to advanced technology in their home, rather than just in a clinical setting.”

Rehabtronics is providing qualifying patients with the chance to trial ReGrasp for 30 days for the price of shipping before purchasing the equipment for a limited period.
