Pioneer Surgical Technology, a developer of orthopedic and spine systems, has appointed Qibin Chip Bao to the position of chief technology officer (CTO).

Dr Bao will be responsible for Pioneer’s continued effort in the area of motion preservation and also for the evaluation of all potential products and projects introduced to Pioneer to determine their fit with the strategic objectives and resources of the company.

Dr Bao has 23 years of medical device research and development experience. Since joining Pioneer Surgical in 2003, he has served as VP of Spine Development and led the development of the P3 technology for spinal motion preservation.

Under his leadership, Pioneer has successfully developed a strong pipeline on motion preservation based on the P3 technology, NuBac artificial lumbar nucleus, NuNec artificial cervical disc and BacJac interspinous decompression device. Prior to joining Pioneer Surgical, Dr Bao held the role of VP, Research and Development at Disc Dynamics from 2000 to 2003 and held a similar role with Advanced Bio-Surfaces from 1998 to 2000.

Marquette-based Pioneer’s focus on innovation has resulted in over 130 US and foreign patents, with numerous patents pending. The company has a portfolio of orthopedic and spine systems. Pioneer entered the orthobiologics market with two acquisitions in 2007. The Orthopaedic, Spine, and Biologic divisions produce cost-effective solutions for surgical procedures that have proven difficult or problematic for both surgeons and patients.
