With a compact size of 1.05mm x 1.05mm, the 1/18in camera module can be used for minimally-invasive endoscopes.
The new wafer-level camera module can acquire 400 x 400 resolution video at 30 frames per second (FPS). It enables a wide 120-degree field of view with an extended focusing range of 3mm to infinity.
In addition, the OVM6946 can be customized for a range of endoscope applications such as medical, veterinarian, and industrial.
According to the company, OVM6946 is the cost-effective single-chip imaging solution for single-use endoscopes.
Currently available for sampling, the new wafer-level camera module is expected to enter volume production in the first quarter of 2017.
OmniVision's CameraCubeChip wafer-level module technology will enable OEMs to simplify and reduce their development cycles.
OmniVision marketing director Aaron Chiang said: "Cross-contamination risks, downtime inefficiencies, and high costs associated with repairs, pre-procedure testing, and sterilization of reusable endoscopes are fueling market interests in disposable endoscopes.
"As a cost-effective and compact camera module with excellent image quality, we view the OVM6946 as an ideal solution for next-generation single-use endoscopes."
