Semiconductor solutions developer OMNIVISION and AdaptivEndo are collaborating to develop a flexible, unified platform for hybrid and single-use endoscopes for gastroenterology, urology, hepatology, gynaecology, and advanced endoscopic surgery.

The partnership intends to deliver unified endoscope consoles to the medical sector for usage both inside and outside operating rooms.

According to OMNIVISION, the console system has simplified controls and is equipped with its image sensors for high-performance imaging. Its clinician-driven design by AdaptivEndo is said to be cost- and performance-optimised.

OMNIVISION medical marketing director Tehzeeb Gunja said: “We have a long history with AdaptivEndo; they use our image sensors and CameraCubeChip across a variety of single-use and hybrid flexible endoscope sizes and clinical applications.

“A common platform across multiple clinical specialties allows for more efficient use of capital equipment and lowers the barrier of adoption for future endoscopes using OMNIVISION’s future medical imagers.”

The collaboration is said to support the development of the unified console platform and hybrid/single-use endoscopes of AdaptivEndo.

OMNIVISION said that each of the AdaptivEndo endoscopes uses common consoles but also has a clinician-driven feature set that is claimed to be unique to specific clinical procedures like ureteroscopy, cholangioscopy, and duodenoscopy.

The endoscopes have customised features like a suction control into the handle and enhanced tool passage for cholangioscopy and a backflow prevention valve and integrated irrigation control for ureteroscopy procedures.

OMNIVISION said that the endoscopic platforms will have common parts, consoles, and connections integrated inside a single platform for usage throughout the operating room, emergency room, and ambulatory surgery centre. The platforms can be tailored for multiple kinds of procedures, the semiconductor solutions developer claimed.

AdaptivEndo president Ed Fancher said: “We entered into this partnership with OMNIVISION as a result of listening to our customers’ needs. Our goal is to make clinicians’ lives easier by enhancing the tools they use and ultimately improving patient care.

“We’ve designed an endoscopy platform focused on clinician-driven features, high performance, and reduced cost.

“We chose to partner with OMNIVISION because they offer best-in-class imaging technology and unparalleled partner support.”
