Japan-based Mitsui Chemicals has acquired SunSensors photochromic lens material business from US-based Corning.

Mitsui Chemicals hopes that the acquisition of SunSensors will allow the company to enhance its ophthalmic lens material business while breaking into the rapidly growing global photochromic lens market

Corning first launched its photochromic eyeglass lens materials in 1960s and the company continued to lead the market with innovations, including its SunSensors brand of photochromic organic lens materials.

According to Mitsui Chemicals, acquisition of Corning’s photochromic lens material business will contribute to the growth of its vision care materials business while expanding the product lineup to improve its ophthalmic lens material solutions and contribute to optimized customer service.

Using efficient global customer and sales network, Mitsui Chemicals will increase sales growth of SunSensors products. The company will also intensify the development of new competitive vision care materials including next-generation photochromic lens material to strengthen its position as a provider of new value for its customers.
