Johnson & Johnson Medical has agreed to acquire German software firm Surgical Process Institute (SPI) for an undisclosed sum.

The German firm offers advanced software solutions to improve patient outcomes and operating room efficiency by reducing variability in surgical procedures.

SPI is specialized in the standardization and digitalization of surgical workflows in the operating theatre.

The company’s Surgical Procedure Manager (SPM) proprietary software solution enables better operating room utilization, in addition to resulting in consistent outcomes.

It offers a feasibility study for the implementation of the digital concept in cooperation with its partner architects.

This program can be used to prepare a new OR, in addition to renovating work on the existing facilities.

In 2018, Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies will distribute SPI´s products in the EMEA region. The company plans to commercialise the products in other major markets by 2019.

Subject to customary closing conditions, the deal is expected to complete in the fourth quarter of this year.

Johnson & Johnson Group world wide chair Sandi Peterson said: “At Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Companies, we are committed to broadening our portfolio of products and services to meet the changing needs of our customers around the world.

“SPI’s unique offerings have been shown to reduce surgery variability and the time spent in the operating room. These new digital tools will allow us to deliver a more comprehensive and effective solution for our customers and help them continue to improve patient care.”
