The National Institute of Health (NIH) has granted $1.5m grant to Integrated Sensing Systems (ISSYS) and the University of Michigan to develop pediatric cardiac miniature implants.

ISSYS president and CEO and the project’s technical principal investigator Nader Najafi said this grant aids them to develop wireless, batteryless, intelligent, miniature implants for patients with congenital and structural heart diseases.

"In particular, this grant paves the way for the start of clinical studies in infants and children with complex congenital heart defects," Najafi said.

University of Michigan pediatric cardiologist Martin Bocks said this pressure sensing implant has the potential to greatly improve the care they provide to their most complex patients and will provide them with unprecedented opportunities to learn more about their physiology.
