Intuitive Surgical, a US-based medical technology company focused on robotic surgery, has received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for its da Vinci SP surgical system.

The da Vinci SP surgical system is intended for simple prostatectomy as a representative procedure to expand FDA-approved urologic surgical procedures.

In addition, the US health agency approved the surgical system for a transvesical approach to simple and radical prostatectomy.

Intuitive said that its da Vinci SP system provides surgeons with robotic-assisted technology to access deep and narrow tissues in the body.

Also, the system provides a minimally invasive experience for complex procedures, as it can enter the body through a single, small incision or a natural orifice.

Intuitive chief medical officer Myriam Curet said: “The addition of simple prostatectomy and the transvesical approach to prostatectomy to the da Vinci SP clearances expands the existing urology indication for SP.

“There is a growing body of clinical evidence on the use of the SP system, and we look forward to continuing our efforts to safely advance minimally invasive surgery.”

Simple prostatectomy is a surgical procedure, where the surgeon removes the part of an enlarged prostate that is blocking the flow of urine.

It is often used in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate.

Radical prostatectomy is a procedure where the surgeon removes the entire prostate gland, often used for patients who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Intuitive said that its da Vinci SP surgical system is part of its portfolio of surgical systems, which also includes da Vinci X and Xi multi-port surgical systems.

The system comes with three, multi-jointed, wristed instruments and a fully wristed three-dimensional (3D), high-definition (HD) camera.

The instruments and the camera are packed in a single cannula and are properly triangulated around the target anatomy at the distal tip.

According to the company, the surgical system is designed to eliminate external instrument collisions that can usually occur in narrow surgical workspaces.

Also, it facilitates flexible port placement and superior internal and external range of motion through the single SP arm.

The da Vinci SP system allows surgeons to control the instruments and the camera, which uses the same surgeon console as the da Vinci X and Xi systems, said the medical device maker.
