Globus Medical, Inc. announced the full launch of its INDEPENDENCE Spacer System which is designed to provide a MILDER Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF). INDEPENDENCE integrates a stabilization plate and a PEEK interbody spacer into a preassembled, easy-to-use system that enables a less disruptive surgery than a traditional ALIF procedure. The entire procedure is streamlined by low profile instrumentation which facilitates a less invasive approach through a smaller incision. The elimination of a traditional plate preserves the natural anatomic profile of a patient's lumbar spine. INDEPENDENCE also incorporates a smooth screw blocking mechanism minimizing the disruption to the anatomy surrounding the surgical site and may lessen the long term impact from surgery. Dr. Ali Mortazavi, an Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon with Resurgens Orthopaedics in Atlanta, Ga. said, "INDEPENDENCE allows me to provide a less invasive procedure to my patients and reduces long term issues with the great (blood) vessels while still allowing the advantages of a traditional ALIF procedure. I have found the instrumentation expedites the entire procedure and allows me to deliver a better overall solution for patients."
