US-based healthcare technology company GE HealthCare has received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) approval for its Portrait Mobile wireless and wearable monitoring solution.

The Portrait Mobile platform is designed to enable real-time continuous monitoring.

It offers a personalised view of the patient’s vitals while the patients are moving during critical recovery periods, particularly after surgery or discharge from the intensive care unit.

The continuous monitoring and real-time data visualisation features help clinicians identify the deterioration earlier than conventional spot-check methods.

Portrait Mobile comes with wireless patient-worn sensors, combined with the smartphone-sized monitor, and eliminates all traditional tethers.

Its dual-vector respiration rate measurement technology leverages an advanced algorithm designed for mobile patients.

The algorithm helps better capture continuous respiratory rate through optimised electrode placement even with changing breathing patterns, said the healthcare technology company.

Portrait Mobile joint trial principal investigator Daniel Sessler said: “Patients recovering from major surgery are fragile. Most patients currently have vital signs monitored every 4-6 hours.

“We have shown that vital sign abnormalities are common – and sometimes profound and prolonged.

“Many potentially serious episodes of instability are missed with intermittent vital sign assessments. Continuous vital sign monitoring might help clinicians identify patients who are having difficulty so they can provide help quickly.”

According to the company, undetected patient deterioration, particularly post-surgery, can lead to harmful yet preventable consequences.

The continuous flow of data and measurement of vitals can help healthcare providers detect patient decline in real-time and intervene before a patient deteriorates.

GE HealthCare said that Portrait Mobile is part of its FlexAcuity monitoring solutions that combine hardware and software engineered to adapt to rapidly changing patient needs.
