Medical device company Exactech has announced first surgeries using its new Newton soft tissue management technology.

The soft tissue management technology integrates dynamic ligament balancing with real-time guidance to serve as a personalised intraoperative solution to enhance total knee replacement surgery outcomes.

First surgeries have been conducted by orthopaedic surgery professor Dr Hari Parvataneni at the University of Florida and orthopaedic surgery professor Dr James Huddleston III at Stanford University Medical Centre.

In a statement, Huddleston said: “Soft tissue management is an area of opportunity for progression in orthopaedics, and Exactech is leading the way. Newton is a sophisticated technology that is designed to provide real-time, patient-specific insights to help easily optimise the soft tissue with the goal of achieving the best possible outcomes for total knee patients.”

Part of the Active Intelligence platform of smart solutions, the new intra-articular device allows surgeons to execute a personalised and well-balanced total knee replacement by engaging the patient’s soft tissue.

Newton, which captures active balance data through the entire arc of motion with the patella in place, integrates with ExactechGPS’s connected platform to help surgeons visualise a predictive plan through operative insights without using external soft tissue tensioners.

With expanded availability planned by the end of this year, the technology is in pilot launch in the US.

Exactech chief marketing officer and large joints senior vice president Adam Hayden said: “We are excited to introduce this game-changing technology for total knee replacement surgery.

“Newton is yet another example of Exactech pioneering innovations that provide orthopaedic surgeons with intelligent insights to make smart decisions throughout the journey of care.”

In December last year, Exactech acquired Muvr Labs, a developer of advanced wearable patientcare devices.
