Ethicon has expanded its hernia solutions portfolio with the launch of Securestrap 5mm Absorbable Strap Fixation device and Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh.

The two new surgical devices provide secure mesh fixation and address patient comfort and surgeon ease-of-use in laparoscopic (minimally invasive) hernia repair procedures, Ethicon said.

Ethicon Securestrap and Ethicon Physiomesh were recently granted 510(k) market clearance by the US Food and Drug Administration.

The absorbable ‘strap’ design of Ethicon Securestrap offers surgeons several advantages when performing hernia repair procedures and these include two points of fixation to straddle mesh pores and fibers including large-pore constructions, enhanced holding strength when deployed at different angles, and secure mesh fixation during the tissue integration period, the company said.

Ethicon said that the low profile of Ethicon Securestrap minimises a patient’s exposure to foreign material on the internal organs.

According to Ethicon, the Physiomesh, a light-weight and partially-absorbable polypropylene mesh, stretches to closely match the abdominal wall and the large pore construction allows for parietal tissue integration, while the poliglecaprone 25 transparent film serves as a tissue separation barrier to minimise visceral attachments.
