Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, has announced the commercial rollout of its advanced surgical stapling device, ECHELON 3000, in the US.
ECHELON 3000 is an advanced surgical stapling device that is designed to staple and transect different tissue types in both open and minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Building upon the ECHELON+ Stapler with GST Reloads, the new-generation device includes both powered firing and powered articulation for enhanced access and control.
It comes with an enhanced articulation span and wide jaw aperture, enabling surgeons to better access and control each transection, even in the most challenging situations.
ECHELON 3000 is designed with a 39% bigger jaw aperture, 27% bigger articulation span, and software that provides real-time audible feedback, said the company.
Ethicon worldwide endomechanical president Tom O’Brien said: “Surgical complications often stem from difficult-to-access anatomy and compromised tissue, which this next generation ECHELON stapler is specifically designed to address.
“Our goal, with ECHELON 3000, is to arm surgeons with a device that helps address the root causes of surgical complications, enabling them to successfully navigate the differing needs of each patient’s anatomy, deliver on their preoperative plans and ultimately make a meaningful difference in patient outcomes.”
ECHELON 3000 is said to offer advanced staple line security, and delivered fewer leakage pathways at the staple line, compared to Medtronic’s Signia Stapling System.
The device can be used in a wide range of surgical procedures, for improving thoracic, colorectal, and bariatric or gastric laparoscopic procedures.
It can also be used for transection and resection of liver parenchyma, hepatic vasculature and biliary structures, pancreas, kidney, and spleen, said the company.
ECHELON 3000 Staplers are sterile, single-patient-use instruments that simultaneously cut and staple tissue, offered in 45mm and 60mm variants.
They come with six staggered rows of staples, three on either side of the cut line, a shaft that can rotate 360⁰ and an articulation mechanism to facilitate lateral access.
BMI Surgery bariatric surgeon Joe Northup said: “Greater jaw aperture, powered articulation and articulation within a shortened distance are all incredibly valuable assets that make an already beneficial stapler, even better.
“Having placed the ECHELON+ stapler in my hand already, it feels natural and familiar to transition right into this new device.”
