The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer (Center) has purchased all the latest oncology products from Elekta AB (Elekta), including Impac and CMS software. The installation includes Elekta Axesse for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and two Elekta Infinity systems for Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT).

Rex Hoffman, M.D. is Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, where the Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center will be located. He says the groundbreaking for the new Center was held in October 2007. “We’re very excited to bring this state-of-the-art cancer center to the San Fernando Valley (California). The Center is on schedule to open its doors to the community in February 2010.” He expects the Center to treat approximately 2,600 new patients every year.

The Center also will utilize Impac and CMS Software, including treatment planning and workflow management solutions, as well as the latest version of MOSAIQ dedicated oncology information system, which streamlines the entire therapy workflow. “We have been using Impac software since the 1990s so we have prior experience with MOSAIQ,” says Dr. Hoffman. “Using MOSAIQ, we have been chartless since June 2008. It seemed natural to simply upgrade.”

This electronic medical record (EMR) will not only be in the radiation oncology department, but will be throughout the building allowing physicians and their staffs to be inter-connected. “By sharing the same information, we should be able to optimize communication and processes between the different disciplines involved in an individual’s care,” says Dr. Hoffman. “In addition, technology also will be used to make the patient’s experience more comfortable and personal. We have installed a JCI (Johnson Controls) Ambient Experience allowing patients to control video images, music, lighting and temperature during their radiation treatment.”
