DJO Global has launched its Empi Phoenix, an electrical stimulator that simplifies the treatment of muscle atrophy pre and post surgery for total knee replacement or ACL repair.

The Empi Phoenix is a prescription medical device that is claimed to offer effective electrotherapy treatments across the recovery cycle.

DJO president and CEO Mike Mogul said, "Addressing muscle atrophy is a real need prior to and during rehabilitation from knee surgery, and the Empi Phoenix is an innovative, simple way for patients to engage with that rehab from the comfort of home."

The device is used in minimizing swelling and pain in addition to combating disuse atrophy and increasing the range of motion.

The Phoenix can help patients by preparing them prior to the surgery by treating muscle atrophy in those muscles supporting the joint.

Over 600,000 knee replacements and 100,000 ACL reconstruction surgeries are performed each year in the US.

The Empi Phoenix has received 510(k) approval from the US Food and Administration (FDA) in May 2013.
