DexCom, a US-based health technology company focused on developing real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) solutions, has officially started construction on its new manufacturing facility in Ireland.

The plant is being built in Athenry in County Galway with an investment of €300m over five years.

Athenry was announced as the site for the plant in May 2023.

Expected to generate over 1,000 jobs to the region, the facility marks one of the largest single private sector investments to be made so far in the West of Ireland.

Set to become the first manufacturing site in Europe for Dexcom, the Irish facility will bolster product distribution across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). This will potentially reduce the cost of goods and enhance sustainability by shortening delivery transit times.

The Irish government, through IDA Ireland, is lending support to the project.

IDA Ireland CEO Michael Lohan said: “The sod turning event is an important moment in this facility – first announced last year – becoming a reality. This important strategic investment by Dexcom, which is the first of its kind outside of the US, will have far reaching economic and social benefits for Athenry, the West and indeed all of Ireland.”

The new facility in Athenry is poised to manufacture millions of Dexcom rtCGM sensors annually with an aim to enhance the quality of life for individuals with diabetes throughout EMEA.

Dexcom Senior Vice President and EMEA general manager Alex Moussa said: “This facility is strategically located in Europe, for Europe.

“This development demonstrates our commitment to sustainable growth and operational excellence in EMEA, as well as to the people we serve. This is only the beginning; we’re truly excited for what’s to come.”

The facility will generate employment opportunities in finance, human resources, and various engineering capacities, from leadership to entry-level positions.

Dexcom plans to establish robust connections with local universities in Galway and adjacent counties, especially in fields related to engineering and quality assurance.
