Covidien has appointed Jose (Joe) Almeida, president of company’s Medical Devices business segment, as president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the company, effective with the planned retirement of CEO Richard Meelia on 1 July.

Almeida also was elected to the company’s Board of Directors, effective 1 July.

Almeida joined Tyco Healthcare, in 1995 as director of Manufacturing and Corporate Engineering and later served as vice president of Global Manufacturing and then president of International in 2004.

Tyco Healthcare spun off from parent company Tyco International in June 2007 and Almeida also held mid- and senior-level positions at Andersen Consulting, Johnson & Johnson, Acufex Medical and Greatbatch.

Covidien manufactures, distributes and services product lines in three segments: medical devices, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.

Covidien products include Autosuture, Kendall, Nellcor, Syneture, Devon, Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals Imaging, Puritan Bennett and Valleylab.
