Core Essence Orthopaedics, Inc. (Core Essence), a medical device company focused on soft tissue and skeletal repair of the extremities, announced that John Moran will serve as chief executive officer (CEO) as well as chairman of the board, effective September 11, 2009. From 1990-1997, Moran founded and served as president of Synthes Spine. At Synthes Spine, Moran played an integral role in the design, manufacture and distribution of implants and instruments for spinal disorders.

Moran has been an active angel investor in the medical device arena. He also currently serves on the boards of Power Medical Interventions, Paradigm Spine, and Ranier Technologies. Moran is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and holds an MBA from Harvard University.

“The addition of John as CEO will greatly benefit the company as it moves from product development to commercialization,” said Zev Scherl, member of CE Ortho’s Board of Directors and General Partner of NewSpring Capital. “John had tremendous success building a proprietary business during his time as President of Synthes Spine Inc.. In his new role as CEO of CE Ortho he now has a platform to build another highly attractive orthopaedic business.”

“I look forward to leading CE Ortho as we begin to execute our sales strategy for our novel extremity products,” stated John Moran. “The market opportunity for intuitive, arthroscopic devices in the extremity segment is substantial and to date the reception from surgeons has been very encouraging.”
