Medical device firm Cook Medical has introduced a new Hercules100 3-stage wire-guided balloon for esophageal dilation.

The new product has been developed to be used for oral or transnasal esophagoscopy (TNE) and it allows otolaryngologists to treat patients with dysphagia and other swallowing disorders.

Cook Medical otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) clinical division global leader Thomas Cherry said: "Swallowing disorders can have devastating consequences for patients and their caregivers. There is a clear need for more effective treatment options."

The Hercules100 balloon is a dilation tool that is made by using noncompliant PET Flex technology, a material said to not stretch like currently available nylon balloons.

Its 3-stage design allows the balloon to inflate to three distinct diameters, helping physicians to avoid using several balloons during a single procedure.

Cook Medical develops and markets medical devices, biologic materials and cellular therapies for healthcare market.
