ConvaTec, a global medical products and technologies company, has introduced Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthlate (DEHP)-free UnoMeter Safeti Plus portfolio of hourly diuresis systems.

The company said that will now offer its major Continence & Critical Care brands in DEHP-free design, including the Flexi-Seal fecal management system and the AbViser AutoValve intra-abdominal pressure monitoring device.

ConvaTec is replacing DEHP in all its products with DEHT, an alternative, safe plasticizer that is widely used in children’s toys and beverage closures in 18 months.

ConvaTec Research & Development vice president Steve Bishop said: "This underscores our continued commitment to patient and environmental safety."

DEHP has been widely used in the medical device industry to soften PVC into a flexible material that can be used in such medical applications as enteral feeding, wound drainage and airway ventilation.

However, concerns have been raised about potentially harmful effects associated with its use.
