CLRS Technology Corp has received over-the-counter (OTC) clearance from FDA for its acne clearing device Claro. The OTC clearance signifies the first time a hand-held intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy device has been available to the consumer for home use, without a prescription.

CLRS Technology said that the IPL device has been used by dermatologists and this announcement marks the first time that the same therapy is available directly to the consumer.

Currently marketed devices target acne with blue light alone and take days or even weeks to show any results. In contrast, Claro targets acne with blue and red light, along with infra-red energy to clear blemishes in as little as 24 hours.

Using patented technology, Claro delivers a series of light pulses in 6 seconds which penetrates clogged pores; eliminating the bacteria that cause acne while also reducing inflammation. Clinical studies demonstrate a 94.8% decrease in p.acnes bacteria after just one 6-second treatment. Claro is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne and does not require the use of any lotions, creams or pills and has no side-effects.

Richard Oberreiter, CEO of CLRS Technology, said: “This technology is far superior to any home-use acne devices currently available, and more closely resembles the treatment a patient would receive through a medical professional.”
