Bovie Medical has received a patent for its laparoscopic electrosurgical electrical leakage detection safety device to prevent burns.

The company said the electrosurgical device will monitor electrosurgical current from the generator, and detects leakage of current in the surgical handpiece during monopolar electrosurgery.

The device will shut down the system if leakage is detected, thus reducing burn risks to the patient.

The company plans to file a 510k application with the FDA for market clearance, after completing the development of the electrosurgical safety device.
