Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) has received CE mark approval for its next-generation blood separation technology, Vacutainer Barricor tube.

BD Vacutainer Barricor is a single-use and plastic evacuated tube designed to collect, separate, transport and process venous blood specimens to get quality plasma for in vitro diagnostic use.

The tube will deliver quality plasma sample by reducing cellular content, as the mechanical separator will open throughout the centrifugation cycle.

According to the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, there is a high demand for rapid test turnaround time among clinicians, as 60% to 70% of the required information on a patient’s chart coming from laboratory test results.

BD UK and Ireland general manger and vice president Mike Fairbourn said: "Laboratory technicians are forced to choose between a clean sample with serum and a fast sample with plasma.

"BD Barricor tubes eliminate this tradeoff, providing a cleaner and faster plasma sample than current methods."

In February this year , BD received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance and European CE marking for its new Vacutainer UltraTouch Push Button Blood Collection Set.

The device uses PentaPoint Comfort 5-bevel needle technology to provide access to difficult veins.
