Medical technology firm Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) has received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance and European CE marking for its new blood collection set.

The BD Vacutainer UltraTouch Push Button Blood Collection Set uses PentaPoint Comfort 5-bevel needle technology, which will provide access to difficult veins.

According to the company, the studies demonstrated that the device’s design helps reduce the chance of a painful injection by creating a flatter and thinner surface to help penetrate the skin effectively.

When combined with BD RightGauge technology, the new device is said to reduce penetration forces by up to 32% compared against another leading blood collection set.

BD Life Sciences preanalytical systems and global health medical medical affairs worldwide vice president Ana Stankovic said: "Phlebotomy is often one of the first procedures hospital patients undergo, and it can set the tone for their entire stay.

"With US reimbursement levels tied to patient satisfaction and the rise of online patient reviews, clinicians are seeking ways to improve these vital, high-touch procedures by reducing patient pain and improving their ability to access difficult veins."

Earlier this month, BD obtained FDA 510(k) approval for its FACSPresto system and FACSPresto CD4/Hb Cartridge.

The BD FACSPresto system is an automated multicolor fluorescent imaging cytometer and absorbance spectrometer, which offers absolute and percentage results of CD4 T lymphocytes and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in whole blood samples to manage HIV/AIDS patients.
