Axsun Technologies has developed a new Tunable Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (Tunable VCSEL) platform for optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging applications.

The Tunable VCSEL platform leverages its core strengths in high performance optical integration and cost-effective volume manufacturing.

It integrates all major tunable VCSEL components into a single compact butterfly package and it enables higher performance and flexibility, reliability and scalability with low power consumption.

Axsun CEO Jonathan Hartmann said: “We are extremely proud of the ongoing commercial adoption and technical success we have had with our core technology. This next generation of Axsun technology will build on that to offer even greater value and performance to our customers. We look forward to partnering with our customers to bring this technology to the market.”

Axsun founder and chief science officer Peter Whitney stated that while the company’s external cavity laser designs offers high value and performance, such a wide tuning bandwidth and high power, the Tunable VCSEL offers significant benefits in performance and scalability for targeted applications.

Tunable VCSEL is based on the company’s MEMS and optical hybrid packaging technology and it is expected to be a superior solution for many existing and emerging OCT imaging applications.

Established in 1998, Axsun Technologies is a developer and supplier of MEMS-based optical engines for medical imaging, industrial spectroscopy and optical telecommunications applications.

The company has developed miniaturized instruments and devices enabling a dramatic shift from lab-based measurements to on-line, at-line and in-vivo measurements.

Last month, the company claims to have reached milestone shipping 15,000 swept lasers for OCT imaging applications.

Axsun CEO Jonathan Hartmann stated that the Axsun’s lasers for OCT imaging offer very high performance systems in ophthalmology, vascular and other medical and industrial imaging applications. This is a significant milestone in the company’s history and is a testament to its technology and the scalability of the manufacturing platform.
