Medical device company Atlas Spine announced the alpha launch of its True Position XL TLIF system.

Supported by the advanced TruLIF technique, this innovative family of True Position® XL implants ranging from 36mm to 51mm in length, far exceeds current TLIF offerings and provides implants comparable to ALIF/Lateral footprints using a posterior approach.

Utilizing the TruLIF™ technique, surgeons and patients benefit from direct decompression, reduced cost and a minimally invasive, single incision without sacrificing implant footprint or bone graft volume.

"Surgeons finally have an L5/S1 posterior solution where lateral approaches are not an option," states Matt Baynham, Atlas CTO. "True Position’s center pivot technology achieves what no other TLIF device on the market can do. This marks the next evolution along the True Position® development continuum."

Atlas Spine developed True Position® XL in response to surgeon demands for a technology with the capability to insert significantly larger implants from a posterior approach. Leveraging the design and intraoperative success of the original True Position implant, True Position® XL utilizes the patented center pivot design providing the necessary mechanical advantage for rotation, and allows surgeons to achieve optimal placement while utilizing a true MIS approach.

The first XL surgical case was completed September 9, 2015 by John Shiau MD, neurological spine surgeon at Staten Island University Hospital, Staten Island, NY, using a 22mm MIS portal.

"Nothing on the market compares to the True Position® XL footprint from a posterior approach. This should make surgeons rethink when to choose an anterior or lateral implant," said Shiau.
