Aesculap Implant Systems, a B. Braun company, has reported the first implantation of its univation X unidondylar knee system that features a fixed platform and peg and fin design to treat medial knee defects.

This first implantation marks the limited launch of the univation X unidondylar knee system in the US market. Featuring anatomical design and fixed platform, the system provides optimal stability with minimal cuts to preserve bone.

According to Aesculap, all univation X knee components come standard with the seven-layer advanced surface coating. IQ Instrument platform of the device provides streamlined, user-friendly instrumentation to optimize surgical time and allow for intra-operative flexibility.

Aesculap president Chuck DiNardo said that this new implant represents an exciting advancement in unicondylar knee replacement.

"The patented Advanced Surface coating provides additional benefits for surgeons and patients alike. Aesculap is excited to be able to offer a complete selection of knee implants with this Advanced Surface coating," DiNardo added.

In October 2013, Aesculap obtained 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration. The company plans full, commercial launch of the univation X Unicondylar knee system in the first quarter 2015.

Aesculap now offers a complete suite of knee replacement products from partial knee to total knee to knee revision with the addition of the unicondylar knee.
