US-based in-vitro diagnostics company Accelerate Diagnostics has introduced the Accelerate Arc system which includes Arc Module and BC Kit for rapid and accurate microbiological identification process for positive blood cultures.

The Accelerate Arc Module, designed for laboratories with MALDI, is a new application of inline centrifugal and sample preparation techniques which can deliver a suspension of cleaned and concentrated microbial cells that can be directly transferred to a MALDI spotting plate using the blood culture (BC) kit.

Accelerate Diagnostics equipped these devices with load-and-go methodology to eliminate the need for batch multiple specimen tests, reducing the waiting time for microbial ID outcome for positive blood cultures by hours.

The system has easy to use interface to facilitate usage by any laboratory technician in only two-three minutes of hands-on time to run.

It is designed to avoid the need for overnight culture incubation for current MALDI users, while minimising the risk of cross reactivity and false positive results associated with quick multi-targeted molecular assays.

The in-vitro diagnostics company said that approximately 30% of molecular tests in some labs turn up as contaminants, which causes wastage of expensive quick multi-targeted molecular kits.

The Arc is intended for research use only and is not for use in diagnostic procedures.
