Abbott has received CE mark approval for its Healon EndoCoat ophthalmic viscosurgical device (OVD) for intraocular lens (IOL) lubrication and insertion.

The clear, viscous, low molecular weight Healon EndoCoat OVD delivery system features a 25-gauge cannula with guard and improved ergonomics of the device for a smooth and consistent delivery.

The device is used as a surgical aid in cataract extraction, IOL implantation, corneal transplantation and glaucoma filtration surgery.

The EndoCoat OVD, which protects and coats the eye when injected during surgery, can be used in combination with any other Healon products such as Healon OVD, Healon GV OVD or Healon5 OVD.

TriMed Eye Center surgical director Donald Nixon said Healon EndoCoat OVD plays a role in their cataract surgeries for overall endothelial cell preservation and patient safety.

"Additionally, the mechanical properties of Healon EndoCoat OVD provide us with the stability we need throughout the entire cataract procedure for even the most challenging cases," Nixon said.
