Abbott has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the launch of its Liberta RC deep brain stimulation (DBS) system to treat movement disorders.
The Liberta RC DBS system with dimensions like those of a smartwatch face, is said to be the world’s smallest rechargeable DBS with remote programming.
According to Abbott, the system provides the longest time between charges of any existing DBS technology. This allows patients with movement disorders to recharge the device only 10 times a year.
The American medical devices and healthcare company said that the Liberta RC DBS system is 31% smaller than other widely used implantable, rechargeable DBS devices that are currently available in the US.
Abbott’s DBS system requires a wireless charger to be put over the device for recharging as infrequently as every 37 days, when operating under regular settings.
The system needs 30 minutes to charge for users who prefer a weekly charging schedule.
The Liberta RC DBS system can be fully recharged twice before needing to be plugged in again due to its wireless charging feature, which also allows users to remain active while wearing it.
Additionally, the system provides customers with individualised charging experiences, configurable settings, and helpful notifications. It can also be operated with an iOS device that is secure and compatible or with an Abbott-supplied patient controller.

The medical devices company said that the Liberta RC DBS system is the only rechargeable DBS device compatible with its proprietary NeuroSphere Virtual Clinic.
NeuroSphere is claimed as a first-of-its-kind connected care technology in the US that enables patients to interact with their doctors.
