3D Systems has expanded its virtual surgical planning (VSP) reconstruction product portfolio with the introduction of Jaw in a Day for single surgery dental rehabilitation.

With the support of the firm’s healthcare expertise and digital-to-physical workflow, the patient-specific process allows surgeons to carry out a full jaw reconstruction in a single surgery.

Jaw in a Day is a single surgery jaw and dental reconstruction enabled through the firm’s VSP reconstruction service.

Surgeons will work with the firm’s engineers to create a personalized surgical plan and design patient-specific surgical guides, models and instruments. Engineers will use modern CAD/CAM technology in the process.

Later, the devices are 3D printed and sterilized for reference and use during the procedure.

According to the company, immediate placement of a provisional dental prosthesis avoids the need for multiple surgeries.

In addition, the Jaw in a Day will reduce the chance of infection and complications that are expected to occur with the multiple surgeries of traditional treatment plans.

Jaw in a Day co-developer David Hirsch said: "This single-stage reconstruction technique has streamlined the treatment of my patients.

“It avoids multiple procedures, shaving months off the time required for full dental rehabilitation."

3D Systems provides its customers with 3D printers, print materials, on-demand manufacturing services and digital design tools.

The firm’s precision healthcare capabilities comprise of simulation, virtual surgical planning, and printing of medical and dental devices, as well as patient-specific surgical instruments.
