Invendo Medical, a developer of sterile single-use high definition endoscopy products in the field of gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, is using OEM peristaltic pumps from Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group (WMFTG) to continually rinse the integral camera lens during examinations.

The pumps deliver the supply pressure needed for cleaning, as well as impressive reliability and ease of handling.

Colon cancer is one of the most common and deadliest forms of cancer. In the vast majority of cases, the disease develops from what are initially benign growths – polyps – on the intestinal mucosa.

Only by using a colonoscope can polyps be reliably detected and removed. As a result of using colonoscopes in Germany, instances of colon cancer have reduced by 16% since 2003. Colonoscopies are also crucial in the treatment of a variety of other diseases that affect the lower part of the gastrointestinal tract. As a result, several hundred thousand colonoscopies are performed in Germany every year.

In order to improve hygiene during colonoscopies, Invendo Medical set about developing the world’s first sterile, single-use colonoscope, the invendoscope SC200. The device is supplied ready to use and sterilised with ethylene oxide.

When performing examinations, regular rinsing of the lens is important to ensure that doctor or surgeon has good visibility throughout the procedure. During a colonoscopy, the lens must be rinsed at least once per minute,” explains Managing Director Timo Hercegfi.

“When choosing the optimum pump, as well as achieving sufficient pressure, our main concern was ensuring easy, faultless operation and reliability. And though the colonoscope is only used once, our proprietary SPU control unit, which works alongside the invendoscope SC200, remains in operation for years, taking part in approximately 1,500 examinations annually.”

WMFTG offers a wide range of OEM pumpheads and drives that can easily be adapted to customer-specific applications. Invendo Medical selected the 313 pumphead with DriveSure integrated brushless DC motor and controller to pump 500ml of sterile water during each examination.

An important criterion when choosing the pump was ease of use. Clinic and hospital staff must be able to change the pump tube quickly, allowing them to focus on the patient and the procedure.

“We have been using the Watson-Marlow 313D pumphead for 18 months now, and it has proven to be a reliable, and well-made product,” states Radovan Susec, Head of Procurement at Invendo Medical.

Pumps from WMFTG are designed for continuous operation. One key reason for this is the optimum interaction between the pump and tube. WMFTG manufactures its own comprehensively certified silicone tubing.
