Canada-based Trillium Health Partners (THP) has partnered with global medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra to use artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnostic imaging.

Under the partnership, THP will adopt AI technology with a new AI-as-a-service agreement through Sectra Amplifier Services.

The Sectra Amplifier Service is a fully managed, cloud-hosted AI solution. It offers clients access to a large selection of verified third-party AI apps.

This will help Trillium Health to implement AI-powered workflows in its diagnostic imaging division.

According to the medical imaging firm, the adoption will assist in the early detection of medical diseases and enable earlier intervention and improved patient outcomes.

Additionally, THP will use the service to trial and assess AI applications before deciding to use them.

Trillium Health Partners diagnostic imaging program chief and medical director Ivan Diamond said: “This technology will enable THP to expedite the diagnosis and treatment of potentially fatal conditions where every minute counts for improved patient outcomes.

“We are proud to be the first Canadian adopter of this cutting-edge technology, which has the potential to reinvent how care is delivered within our walls and beyond.

“Using the Sectra Amplifier Service to deploy this tool has significantly simplified the process in integrating AI into our workflow.”

With three primary locations, Trillium Health Partners sees 1.6 million patients annually on average. In addition, the company performed over 695,000 diagnostic tests in the previous year.

Signed in the second quarter of Sectra’s fiscal year 2023/2024, THP will be the first Canadian customer to link Sectra Amplifier Services to its Sectra Enterprise Imaging PACS.

Sectra Canada president Nader Soltani said: “Over the last five years, AI has been a hot topic within healthcare, and we are seeing the early adopters; predominantly in diagnostic imaging.

“It is encouraging to see Canadian hospitals embrace AI for both research and clinical use, leading to higher-quality patient care for our population. Sectra is committed to serving our customers on their journeys towards AI adoption.”
