Global interventional therapies firm Penumbra has introduced new POD (Penumbra occlusion device) Packing Coil in the US, developed to use as a complementary device with the firm’s Ruby and POD embolization products.

Packing

The new POD Packing Coil has been designed to pack very densely behind Ruby and POD to occlude arteries and veins across the peripheral vasculature, including aneurysms.

The company has developed a suite of thrombectomy and embolization products to treat a wide range of peripheral vascular conditions.

Penumbra chairman and CEO Adam Elsesser said: "Our embolization platform and the Indigo System are examples of our commitment to innovating new technologies for challenging vascular conditions for which there are significant unmet clinical needs.

"We are intent on changing treatment paradigms to improve clinical outcomes across two large and growing markets: neuro and peripheral vascular."

Penumbra has also developed next-generation Indigo system, which is a continuous aspiration thrombectomy device that will remove fresh, soft emboli and thrombi from the peripheral arteries and veins.

The device comprises four catheter sizes, including CAT 3, 5, 6 and 8.

In May 2015, Penumbra obtained 510(k) approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for its ACE64 aspiration thrombectomy system for the revascularization of large vessel occlusions in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
