The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a medical device alert regarding Oxford patient hoist weigh scales, stating that the weigh scales may detach during lifting operation, resulting in serious injury.

According to MHRA, Oxford patient hoist weigh scales supplied by Sunrise Medical or Joerns Healthcare between July 1997 and April 2003 have an insecure attachment due to a missing or damaged securing bolt, which may lead to detachment.

MHRA has asked all those involved in the use of these hoists inspect them, to ensure that the securing bolt is undamaged and the locking nut is secure.

In addition, weighing scales having missing or damaged bolts should not be used until they are repaired/ replaced.
