Human care firm Elekta has received CE mark approval for its Leksell Gamma Knife Icon precision radiosurgery system, which has been developed to treat a wide range of cranial targets.

With features such as stereotactic imaging, online Adaptive DoseControl, ultra-precise dose delivery and the availability of frameless treatments, the Icon can treat virtually any target in the brain, regardless of type, location or volume.

Elekta president and CEO Tomas Puusepp said: "Leksell Gamma Knife Icon is a new concept for performing precision radiosurgery for all types of cranial cases with unlimited clinical and workflow flexibility.

"Clinicians can choose either frame-based or frameless methods to immobilize the patient’s head, as well as the option to perform the treatment in a single session or in multiple sessions."

Located in Marseilles of France, the University Hospital La Timone installed the Leksell Gamma Knife Icon precision radiosurgery system, according to the firm.

Elekta has submitted application to obtain 510(k) approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the Icon.

The company develops advanced tools and treatment planning systems for radiation therapy, radiosurgery and brachytherapy.
